North Yorkshire West Girl Guides “aMAZEing” County Camp
We had a “aMAZEing” time at our County Camp and the weather was very kind to us. Over 270 members joined the camp at Hornby Lithe Stainforth – we had Brownies Guides and Rangers camping and Brownies staying in the bunk barn, plus more Brownies and Rainbows visiting us on Tuesday. The camp main theme was ‘Crystal Maze’ (as in the TV programme), with the girls completing challenges to acquire crystals. We also had Automatic Lock In too! Once all the challenges were completed, we had a grand finale where the girls had to find silver balls or bonus balls in a large paddling pool to determine the overall winner.
As well as the Crystal Maze challenge, the girls got the chance to master the climbing wall, shoot some arrows, learn new bush craft skills and visit the newly refurbished swimming pool – a great time to have a shower and compete in It’s a Knockout. Always included in our camps are our crafts, developing camping skills and mastering new menus on outdoor cooking equipment.
During 2023, the NYW Outdoor team have been bringing back outdoor events to the girls after Covid, so the camp represented life back to normal, which is great for the movement. We are now pushing hard to complete our new Guiding centre in Harrogate, the building was water-tight at the end of 2019 with the plans in place to complete the internal work in 2020, but as Covid struck we had to suspend all building and our grants were diverted to Covid related issues. We are now planning for the work to be complete by the end of 2023 with several fundraising events happening across the county.
The Guides, like all other voluntary movements, are always looking for new volunteers and now Settle Brownies are needing help. One of their leaders is having to stand down due to work commitments, if you feel able to offer help to the unit, please register on the Girl Guide website details below.
